News: Continental examines
cessation of production at Traiskirchen
The board of management at Continental AG intends to initiate
the closure of the Traiskirchen factory in Austria. Weaker
demand for car tyres and the strong competitive and price pressures
resulting from market saturation in the truck tyre market,
which has been in evidence for some years, have made it necessary
to take this step. Reduced production requirements and the
comparatively high production costs at this location mean that
the profitability required to secure the location in the long-term
has not been achieved.
The plant is to close in July 2002. The necessary consultations
with the companys works council and the relevant authorities
will begin immediately.
The mixing hall and calender production, which manufacture
the crude rubber mixtures and the steel and textile fabric
inlays for tyre production, are not immediately affected
by the restructuring plans. This division with its approximately
300 jobs as well as the sales division with more than 100
employees, also located at the plant, will continue for the
immediate future. About 950 jobs will be affected by the
proposed closure.
The examination of the works structure of the Continental Group has not thereby
been concluded.
